| Jack Traugh of Berwick was an
independent delivery man for Clewell's Dairy in Berwick. Here, in this 1959 photo, he's
just finished loading up for his daily run. Though legally blind, Traugh worked seven days
a week from 6:00am until 11:00pm for most of his adult life. He also sold ice cream from
the wagon and rang a bell to signal his approach. Many adults today will remember hearing
the bell and running to the curb to buy a 5 cent popsicle. A question many times asked is,
"what was the horse's name"? He was known as Jimmy. A loyal companion and
dedicated worker for Jack, he had the uncanny ability to know each street and each stop
along the way. Jimmy needed very little coaching from Jack to travel the route. In the late 60's an accident involving a motor
vehicle ended this piece of Berwick history. The wagon was damaged and beyond repair.
Sadly, Jimmy was seriously injured and died a short time later. Jack was only slightly
injured and went into retirement. He passed away in 1969. Today the walls to the building in the picture are
still visible and located in the 300 block of West Front Street on property now owned by
the Berwick Water Company. Rumor has it the wagon was last seen in Hazleton a
few years after the accident but it's never been verified or determined if still in
existence today. The bell Jack rang is still with the family and
hopefully we'll have a photo of it here, soon. |
