| The El Caminos regrouped with Scranton's Auggie Christiano on bass and
Rick Richards on drums, and landed a record contract with RCA Records.
In
keeping with the psychedelic experimentation that was popular at the time, they changed
their name to the Glass Prism.
The
LP entitled Poe Through The Glass Prism (RCA LSP-4201 1969) incorporated 11 poems
by Edgar Allen Poe, set to a dirge-like rock format, and featuring a macabre organ
backdrop by group member Carl Siracuse. The Raven was the 45rpm single from the
album. It became a regional hit as it charted #2 on WARM (Scranton) and placed in the Top
Ten on WILK (Wilkes-Barre). Nationally, the song climbed into the top 50's, despite a
lackluster promotional campaign from RCA Records.
The
Glass Prism album was recorded in the Les Paul Studios, Mahwah, New Jersey and was
produced by Gene Weiss. Les Paul and Russ Paul were the recording engineers. Critically,
the album's success was thought to have been due to the areas hypnotic fascination for the
works of horror-master Poe, reflected in such pieces as The Conqueror Worm, Eldorado,
Beloved, and A Dream.
A
second album, On Joy and Sorrow (RCA LSP-4270 1970) was also released, this time
featuring a rock format and mostly all originals. Gene Weiss produced the LP, which did
not net the success of its predecessor. It was to become the final curtain call for The
Glass Prism.
