On the Corner
The Dug Road
Our opening photo is a somewhat rare post card of Dug Road in Berwick. The small one lane dirt road started at the corner of Fowler Avenue and Front Street. It went down to the train station, now Decker’s Scrap Yard. Just past this point it was named Canal Street and terminated at the Berwick-Nescopeck Bridge. After the new bridge was built it was extended to run under the bridge and now curves around the Municipal Parking lot to become Mulberry Street. In the 1980’s Dug Road was graded off and closed, however portions of it are still visible from the eastern end of the scrap yard.

ADDED January 28, 2008:

More about Dug Road.

I checked today and to see Dug Road you must cross Front Street to the river side at Fowler Avenue and walk about 25 feet north on Route 11. This would be towards Shickshinny. The exit/entrance is still quite visible and covered with a nice layer of grass.

Checked a few records and found this information. The road was built in the very early part of the 1900's or possibly even in the late 1800's but an exact year is unknown. It was used as a shortcut to get to Canal Street. One of the heaviest users of Dug Road was the Stegmaier Brewing Company of Wilkes-Barre, PA. They had a storehouse located close to where the entrance to Decker's Scrap yard is today. Dug Road was a quick back & forth route to the brewery.

Here is THE COVER and A PAGE from a 1904 "Pennsylvania Telephone Company" directory showing that the Stegmaier storehouse phone number was 40-Z. That's a good one for you Trivia People!

Dug Road was used until sometime in the early 1980's Front Street was widened at the Fowler Avenue intersection. For safety reasons a guide rail was installed at that point. The length of rail needed to cover the length of the widening project stretched past Dug Road's entrance/exit and at that time the road was abandoned.
